along with Science and Nature
When we talk about Rhode Island we think of the Beaches. Even though it is one of the United States smallest States, it is big with Beaches. Did you know that there are more than 100 beaches both public and private throughout the state? WOW!
Coming from Florida and California and New York. I know my beaches. I know that people enjoy different styles of beaches. I like the Gulfside of Florida. The water is a little warmer and calmer. California I like some of the more private beaches with the mountians in the background.
So what does Rhode Island have...well let's chat about Easton's Beach. It's located in the Newport area of Rhode Island and it's Newport's only beach. What this beach is famous for is it's Cliff Walk. This type of scenery always reminded me of the movie the Ghost and Mrs. Muir. Great movie if you have never seen it you may want to watch it...and girls...you may want a hanky around toward the end...but I will not give it away. Anyway, Easton's Beach has many activities to do, like skateboarding park, weekly FREE summer concerts, a seasonal carousel for the little ones or the child in all of us. They have a children's playground and picnic pavillion. Now something I have never heard of and though how great is this...is they have over sand wheelchairs...Free use....Now I know some of us like to bring our fur babies on vacation with us...but unfortunately during the height of the season which is Memorial Day thru October 1...Dogs are not permitted at this time.
Are you into long walks on white sandy beaches...no we are not in the Caribbean right now. We are at Crescent Beach on the Block Island of Rhode Island. This Beach is exactly that, a stretch of white sand great for those romantic walks.
Now as I pointed out in the beginning I liked the more secluded beach in California...there is one right up my alley. Mansion Beach, this beach is also located on Block Island. It is famous for it big waves, so I am sure those who love to surf will probably pop up there. The best way to arrive at this beach is by bike. The parking is limited and space fills fast. There are also no facilities on this beach.
I have only pointed out three beaches out of the over 100 so take your time visit a few and see which one suites your fancy.
Because Rhode Island is both Natural features and City...I think we will talk a bit about the Science and Nature of this Great Little State. I talked about the different regions in my podcast and each region has it's unique curiosities. However if you are with the kids and would like to show them a little science but make if fun...or even if you are into some exploring...
Go and visit the Museum of Natural History and Planetarium. This is in Providence. It's Rhode Islands only natural history museum. The Planetarium is also the states only public planetarium. When I was young I loved going to the Planetarium.
Are you a lover of the Sea. Check out Block Island's Maritime Institute. It has activities for all ages. They have a harbor tour, coastal habitat expedition, aquaculture and even a squid dissection for those interested in marine biology. For the kids they even have touch tanks filled with creatures fo the sea like horseshoe crabs, squids, sea urchins and oyster toadfish (which I never heard of)
I personally love to be out on a boat...So I can jump on the Save the Bay Seal Watch Cruise. Go and see the seals in thier natural habitat and you will also get the added delight of lighthouses on selected tours.
So as you can see this tiny little state has a fun dynamic about it. Whether it's just you and your spouse. You and the whole family. Or if you just want to do a little exploring on your own. Rhode Island...who knew!
