Well we are on a journey to Re-Discover America. America is a very diverse land and we are going to explore all our States and some of the towns and cities and hideaway spots and vacations destinations and more.
So why not talk about one of United States samallest areas, Rhode Island. Did you know that Rhode Island was one of the first of the original Thirteen Colonies to declare Independence from British rule?
I have been asked why do they call it Rhode Island when it really isn't an Island. Rhode Island is also nicknamed "The Ocean State" and that it is. Just to give you a little geography...Rhode Island is bordered by Connecticut to the west, Massachusetts to the north and east and the Atlantic Ocean to the south, via Rhode Island Sound and Block Island Sound. So with all those large bays and inlets...there is a lot of water front beaches.
When you say Rhode Island you think Providence or Newport. Those are the areas that you hear about the most. I will be talking about them more in future blogs and podcasts.
There are 6 regions...each unique and Rhode Island is only about 48 miles long by around 37 miles wide. So if you are planning a visit to Rhode Island you can probably drive around it in one day....but you are going to want to plan a stay and explore each region.
Here is a list of the regions and what they are known for:
Blackstone Valley-----Birthplace of America's Industrial Revolution
This is river frontage...where most mills sprang up. The manufacturing mills are all but gone now, but now there are museums, art studios and even factory outlet stores.
Block Island---"One of the Last Great Places"
An 11 square mile seaside resort has rolling hills and dramatic bluffs...sounds like its right out of the movie The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. They even have gorgeous Victorian Hotels and inns. Shops and restaurants abound and there are frequent ferry rides to and from this lovely island.
Newport---The City by the Sea
Did you ever hear of a small little boat race called "The America's Cup" ... this is how Newport became so well known. Newport also has magnificent Gilded Age Mansions. You can actually tour some of these beauties. But Newport is also a great place for festivals. They even have one called the Newport Winter Festival...its in February....Brrrrrr.
Providence and Warwick
Providence is known at the Renaissance City. Why?....It is loaded with historic elegance, such as preserved Colonial/Federal, Greek Revivial and Victorian Houses...and then you have the cultural attractions, The Performing Arts Cener the Philharmonic and Museums....
Warwick is a place to get your shopping fix in. Hundreds of specialty shops and discounts stores and two malls. Imagine that two malls in this one spot in a state that only measures a few short miles.
Warwick....
South County---100% Natural
If it is a relaxed layed back vacation destination then check out this area of Rhode Island. Sandy White beaches perfect for strolling. There's boating and fishing and water-skiing and whale watching and evey beach coming. Something that I always enjoyed coming from New York is Summerstock theater.
Yes you can see and do all this and more in this charming region of the United States called Rhode Island.
Wow! So much to do and see in a State that is so small. I will be going into more of the sites and sounds and places to stay as we dive deeper....(couldn't resist that) into this phenominal State.
